Ely Tower Passivhaus, Brecon
DHV Architects have recently received planning permission for Brecon Ely Tower. The project's site is within the northern part of the late eleventh century Brecon Castle and involves construction of a new low-energy house and office for the Bishop of Brecon and Swansea. This will replace the existing brick and concrete1960s dwelling, which is poorly insulated and suffering from reinforcement corrosion. The building's convoluted plan form has created a functionally insufficient series of spaces for the requirements of the Bishop and Cathedral.
The project will aim to sympathetically tie into the surrounding vernacular through referencing medieval episcopal hall-houses and Welsh longhouses; using materials such as Brecon Sandstone, Welsh slate and Welsh larch timber cladding to compliment the existing conservation area and withstand exposed conditions of the site. A contemporary timber cladded ground floor extension will provide additional spaces required for meeting and administrative purposes, thus enabling Cathedral operations to be more effectively managed and maintained.
